  • Rhodium is a chemical element with the symbol Rh and atomic number 45.
  • Rhodium is a hard silvery white and durable metal that has a high reflectance.
  • Rhodium metal is, as a noble metal, inert.
  • Rhodium occurs natively with other platinum metals in river sands of the Urals and in North and South America.
  • Rhodium is one of the rarest elements on Earth.
  • The industrial extraction of rhodium is complex as the metal occurs in ores mixed with other metals such as palladium, silver, platinum, and gold.
  • Rhodium is often produced as a by-product of other metals extraction, when its production becomes more economical.
  • Rhodium is usually obtained as a by-product in the recovery of platinum from its ores.
  • Rhodium is separated by a series of chemical and physical reactions from other platinum metals with which it occurs.
  • It has been found that although rhodium can be extracted under certain conditions , the PGMs are more readily extracted and therefore amines are useful only when Rh is the only precious metal in solution.
  • The primary use of this element is as an alloying agent for hardening and improving the corrosion resistance of platinum and palladium.
  • Rhodium is used to make electrical contacts, as jewelry and in catalytic converters, but is most frequently used as an alloying agent in other materials, such as platinum and palladium.
  • It is useful as an electrical contact material as it has a low electrical resistance, a low and stable contact resistance, and is highly resistant to corrosion.
  • Rhodium is used primarily to make alloys with other metals. These alloys are used for specialized industrial purposes and in jewelry.
  • Rhodium is also used in jewellery, where it is used to plate white gold via electrolytic deposition.
  • Demand from the glass industry for rhodium is also expected to be strong.
  • The majority of demand will originate from Asia, where manufacturers of flat panel display glass have continued to invest heavily in new production capacity.
  • The primary, or mine, production of rhodium will rise further, as will the amount of metal reclaimed from spent automotive
    catalysts.
  • The rhodium price has risen predominantly on the back of increased use of the metal in autocatalysts manufactured for motor vehicles in the United States, Europe and Japan.
  • Strong demand is expected to continue for at least the next year and the market is expected to be tight with limited liquidity.
  • Rhodium is also used in the fabrication of glass and this industry has showed significant growth.
